Biogenic filaments and composite materials with mineral or vegetable fillers

GMBU e.V. offers new materials with natural fillers - for a natural look and feel in 3D printing. The filaments and granules can be processed like conventional PLA, but offer a wood-like surface compared to other commercial products.
Natural residues from production processes, such as hemp or hop shives, cocoa or coffee husks and coconut fibers, serve as fillers for the composites. No additional cultivation areas are therefore required for the natural materials used, as they are a by-product of the process. Waste materials that are usually only used for composting or as a biogas substrate are thus given new added value. 
The natural appearance of the filaments and the ultimately printed bodies is created by the comparatively large grain size of the added natural materials. In addition to 3D printing, the developed granulate can also be processed using injection molding or compression molding. The natural look is emphasized particularly intensively in the large format. In sheet form, the natural composites developed can be easily processed by hand using conventional tools. Thanks to the thermoplastic polymer base PLA, the sheets can also be shaped into any conceivable form using thermoforming. The range of material variants is to be extended to include further variations in the future. Both light bleached and colored filaments are planned. In addition to the actual fillers, other base polymers such as PBS and PHB will also be used for the natural filaments in the future.
