International design competition for additive manufacturing technologies 2022


The 7th edition of the international design competition for additive manufacturing and advanced technologies called for the submission of innovative design projects.

The challenge was being advertised as part of Rapid.Tech 3D, the future-oriented specialist event for the AM scene and a creative meeting place for start-ups as well as experts and industry giants in additive manufacturing.

The competition addresses students, young professionals / start-ups and professionals - who work in design or technical areas such as automobiles, software, research or the medical sector.

In 2022, prizes with a total value of 150,000 EUR were awarded in the following ten disciplines:

  • Mobility:  Bellow rail brake – Functionally integrated fail-safe-closed AM brake for Hyperloop
  • Architecture & Sustainability: WASP _ TECLA, the eco-sustainable 3D printed habitat / Dior Concept Store
  • Best student: GlasKlar
  • Design: Tanaruz Boats
  • MedTech: Multi-axis robot-based bioprinting system supporting natural cell function preservation and cardiac tissue fabrication
  • FashionTech: Setae Jacket for Chro- Morpho Collection by Stratasys
  • Digital: Partbox - Click and Print
  • Electronics: Future Electric Motor Systems 3 (FEMS3) - Aerospace Motor
  • Material: Geo Slate

The prize money of 35,000 euros was kindly supported by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Science and Digital Society.

In the sixth year of the innovation competition, submissions from 32 countries and 5 continents were submitted to the top-class, 21-member international jury. The focus of the 3D Pioneers Challenge 2021 was not only on the core area of additive manufacturing, but also on innovations in the area of advanced technologies.

The Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Science and Digital Society once again provided the prize money totaling 35,000 EUR.

The 3D Pioneers Challenge is the world's most highly endowed and most renowned design competition of its kind for advanced technologies.
