AM is a game-changer for freedom and sustainability in architecture and building – new Rapid.Tech 3D forum demonstrates the potential of additive technologies in this field
(Erfurt, 8 June 2021). 3D printing showed what it’s capable of during the first few months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thanks to its ability to realise practically any kind of dataset and therefore produce missing parts, additive manufacturing (AM) became a tool that saved the day. The initial shortage of masks and ventilators was swiftly alleviated, and prerequisites were set for conventional series productions. “AM played to its strengths under these extreme conditions. Current experiences of using additive techniques in the field of medical technology have also proven very useful. AM remains a fast-growing segment in the medical field. Not least because our mastery of the process is improving and we are seeing more and more progress in precision and reproducibility. We will demonstrate a few examples at the Medical, Dental & Orthopaedic Technology forum hosted at the online Rapid.Tech 3D event on 23 June 2021, and we will also discuss the new regulatory requirements,” explains Ralf Schumacher, Head of CMX Digital Solutions at Swiss company Medartis AG. He is overseeing the content and structure of the forum.
The regulations concern the entire medical-technology branch over these few weeks. They are enshrined in the new EU Medical Devices Regulation (MDR). MDR came into effect on 25 May 2017. Its transition period ended on 26 May this year. From this date, manufacturers will be obliged to follow the current rules and regulations. Manufacturers are also required to prove their compliance with certain regulatory standards for products that have been fabricated using additive techniques. Dr. Özlem will be taking a look at the impact of the new directive on additively manufactured implants and other medical technology products. Dr Weiss is managing director of Expertants GmbH Schwalbach/Frankfurt, a service provider specialising in development and regulatory services for medical products and additive manufacturing. She also coaches and assesses start-ups in life sciences and additive-manufacturing industries.
By developing the world’s first 3D printer to feature an integrated clean room, Kumovis GmbH, is bringing additive manufacturing right to the doctor’s surgery and the patient. Its system for processing high-performance and bioresorbable plastics lowers the entry barriers for 3D printing in hospitals. Martin Herzmann, Business Development Manager at the Munich-based start-up, will be using the digital Rapid.Tech 3D platform to demonstrate how customised cranial implants can be produced at affordable prices using additive technologies ? something not economically feasible with milling or injection moulding.
Frank Naumann of Orthovital GmbH showcases applications in digital orthotics and prosthetics. In his lecture, he examines the design of complete digital process chains and explains how 3D printing can be used to enhance the quality of orthopaedic aids, both in function and appearance.
The Medical, Dental & Orthopaedic Technology forum makes up part of the digital Rapid.Tech 3D specialist conference on 23 June 2021.
