Accurate to the Nanometer: 3D Printing Can Be This Precise

Since the first 3D printing methods in the 1980s, a variety of processes have been developed for different materials and requirements. In order to meet the high quality requirements for the printed parts, today's processes use high-precision optics and positioning systems to achieve impressive tolerances. Processes with sub-micrometer resolution are paving the way for revolutionary applications. Additive manufacturing plays a key role in tissue engineering, for example. This brings the production of artificial organs within reach, which can significantly improve the quality of life of countless people.

Positioning and Measuring

Precise positioning and measuring are the cornerstones of high-precision 3D printing. SmarAct's ironless linear motors are the ideal component for precise positioning tasks: Thanks to the direct drive without any other mechanical components, the MLS positioners achieve a repeatability of less than 50 nm. In addition, the contactless drive principle enables long mileage and high speeds. To further increase the accuracy, the position near the point of interest can be measured with a PICOSCALE interferometer to automatically correct parasitic motion. In combination with piezo-driven SMARSLIDE® drives, resolutions of less than one nanometer can be achieved.

Everything from a Single Source

SmarAct's MCS2 controller platform is much more than just a driver for linear motors: the modular concept allows for a holistic solution from a single source. 
For example, the integration of an IO module makes it possible to link motion sequences with external signals in order to achieve greater flexibility in automation. This makes it possible to precisely synchronize time-critical processes with the motion system, such as switching on and off of a laser during certain production steps. The input and output of analog signals and their control is also possible without additional hardware.
